Henna is a natural colorant made from the dried leaves of the Lawsonia inermis shrub. Henna can be used to paint leather, silk, cotton, and wool but the beautiful reddish-orange brown dye has been used for thousands of years to dye skin (mehndi), fingernails, and hair. On cellulose fibers, the dye produces a pale ecru color and must be used with a mordant such as tannic acid.
